Currently, Ortho-McNeil markets AXERT® (almotriptan malate) Tablets, a prescription migraine medicine with an effective combination of fast and lasting acute migraine pain relief.
AXERT is indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults and should be used only when a clear diagnosis of migraine has been established. AXERT is not intended for the prophylactic therapy of migraine or for use in the management of hemiplegic or basilar migraine. Safety and effectiveness of AXERT have not been established for cluster headache, which is present in an older, predominantly male population.
Important Patient Information
Like all prescription drugs, AXERT can cause side effects. In clinical studies, AXERT was generally well tolerated. Side effects were reported in a small percentage of patients and were usually mild and temporary. In these studies, the most common side effects were nausea, headache, sleepiness, dry mouth, and burning or prickling sensations in the arms, hands, legs, and/or feet. Ask your healthcare professional about side effects and other important considerations before you take AXERT.
AXERT is not right for everyone. Do not take AXERT if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease or a history of heart disease, other types of headaches, or if you have had an allergic reaction to AXERT or any of its ingredients (ask your doctor if you are unsure).
AXERT is a prescription medication used to treat migraine attacks in adults. AXERT is a member of a class of drugs known as triptans. Use AXERT only for a migraine attack. Do not use AXERT to treat headaches caused by other conditions. If you are unsure if you suffer from migraines, tell your doctor about your symptoms. Your doctor will decide if you have a migraine.
